Planning a long trip can be both exciting and daunting. Where should you start? What steps should you follow? How do you ensure you wouldn’t miss anything? You might find it overwhelming, especially if this is your first time for a long-term travel.

First things first – you need to define where you want to go in order to have a goal to work toward. Just like in any other tasks, this will help you figure out what your next step should be. Planning a trip can be different for each and every traveler. But don’t fret as we have compiled some general tips to help you plan your upcoming long-term getaway.

Figure out the length of your trip

One of the best ways to know the average cost of your trip is to know for how long you’re going away. This way, you can figure out how much money you need to save as you prepare for your upcoming trip. The length of your travel will also determine how many nights you will book an accommodation or how many activities you can fit in. So before you plan anything else, figure out first the number of days or weeks you wish to spend outdoors.

Research Your Costs

As mentioned above, its easier to do the next steps once you already have an idea on how many weeks or days you wish to travel. The cost will also depend on the style of travel you want. Do you wish to do a DIY adventure? Are you planning to try solo backpacking? Would you rather hire an agent who will figure out everything for you? Knowing all of these will allow you to have an idea on how much travel budget you will need for your trip. Of course, it will be a lot cheaper if you will do it on your own or you will go backpacking. But if money is not an issue, you can always work with an agent and stay in luxury hotels.

Start preparing your gear and budget

Write down all your expenses so you can determine how and where you are spending money and how you can save a few dollars for your trip. You spend a lot of money every day without even noticing it as you take small purchases. From buying bottled  water, buying a snack, up to that overly priced  coffee, you can use all these unnecessary purchase to prepare money for your much awaited adventure. Jot down your daily unnecessary expenses and see how much you can save if you no longer buy them.

Aside from the budget, you should also consider checking if you already have all the travel gear you need for your trip.

Check for Online Deals

Now that you’re prepared for your trip, don’t forget to check for online deals. Before you even go and buy that ticket for your flight or book that hotel for your overnight stay, check for deals you might have missed. There are a lot of travelers all over the world and most of these online promos are available on off season.
