Gigantes Island, locally known as Islas de Gigantes, is located in the municipality of Carles in northern Iloilo [1]. Despite its singular name, Gigantes is actually a group of islands consisting of approximately 10 islands and islets, with Gigantes Norte and Gigantes Sur being the two largest and most well-known  [2].

The islands are believed to have earned their name from the Spanish word “gigante,” meaning giant. According to local stories, early Spanish explorers discovered unusually large human bones inside caves on the islands and believed they belonged to giants. While the legend remains part of local folklore, the name Islas de Gigantes has endured through the years and continues to add a sense of mystery to the destination.

During our trip, Gigantes Island was our Day 2 destination after spending the previous day exploring the beautiful island of Guimaras. That adventure is a story in itself. Even now, just thinking about it brings back memories of its stunning coastline and the unforgettable aroma of the island’s famous mango pizza fresh from the oven.

From Iloilo City, we made our way north to Estancia Port, where our island-hopping adventure officially began. Although the land transfer takes a few hours, the anticipation builds with every mile. Once the turquoise waters and picturesque islands start appearing on the horizon, you’ll quickly realize that the journey is all part of the experience.

Starting the Adventure at Estancia Port

Our Gigantes Island experience began at Estancia Port, where we availed an island-hopping package. Visitors can choose from various tour options, ranging from day trips to overnight adventures lasting two or even three days.

For those planning independently, chartering a pump boat for a whole-day island-hopping tour around Gigantes typically costs between ₱1,500 and ₱2,500 for up to ten people. This usually includes life vests, while a guide costs an additional ₱500.

Hiring a guide turned out to be one of the best decisions we made. Not only were they knowledgeable about the islands, but they were also incredibly kind and helpful throughout the trip. As an added bonus, they knew all the best photo spots and took fantastic pictures for our group.

What stood out here was the abundance of local food and souvenir vendors. If you forgot essentials like hats, snacks, drinks, or even beach accessories, chances are you’ll find them here. It’s also a great place to pick up souvenirs and support local businesses.

The food selection was impressive as well. Fresh seafood, grilled delicacies, and local snacks were readily available, making it a pleasant introduction to the flavors of Gigantes.

Top Islands & Stops in the Gigantes Tour

Our First Stop: Pulupandan Beach

The first stop on our island-hopping journey was Pulupandan Beach. The beach greeted us with calm waters, soft sand, and a laid-back atmosphere that immediately set the tone for the day.

What caught my attention right away were the nipa huts and the trees swaying gently in the sea breeze. It looked exactly like the tropical island many of us used to draw as kids—complete with a small hut by the beach, coconut trees, and clear blue water. Seeing that childhood image come to life was a surprisingly nostalgic moment.

Despite its tiny size, the islet is surrounded by intriguing rocky formations and vibrant coral flats that peek through the translucent shallows. It felt like the perfect, unhurried introduction to the raw, natural beauty of the Carles archipelago.

Tangke Lagoon

One of the highlights of the tour was Tangke Lagoon, a stunning natural saltwater lagoon surrounded by towering limestone cliffs [3]. The lagoon’s emerald waters were calm, inviting, and impossible to resist. In fact, plunging into the cool water was the perfect way to begin a day of swimming, island hopping, and soaking up everything Gigantes had to offer.

Many visitors also took advantage of the famous cliff-diving spot nearby. I initially wanted to try the jump myself, but considering my tendency to be a little clumsy, I decided against it. Saving my friends from potentially having to carry me around with a sprained ankle seemed like the wiser choice.

Fortunately, several members of our group took the plunge and later said the experience was absolutely worth it. If you decide to swim or try the cliff jump, be mindful of other visitors in the water and always follow your guide’s safety instructions. The lagoon is meant to be enjoyed by everyone, and a little courtesy goes a long way in making the experience safe and enjoyable for all.

Cabugao Gamay Island

Cabugao Gamay Island is easily the most iconic stop in Gigantes. Its famous viewpoint is often featured in tourism campaigns, travel magazines, and countless social media posts for good reason [4].

Because of its popularity, visitors should expect a queue for the viewpoint. Fortunately, waiting doesn’t feel like a chore. While waiting for your turn, you can swim in the crystal-clear waters, explore different corners of the island, or take photos from various scenic spots.

Once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of turquoise waters embracing two stretches of white sand. It’s the kind of view that instantly earns a spot as your new profile picture or becomes the highlight of your next social media update. Honestly, it’s hard to take a bad photo here.

Another thing we appreciated was the small stall located near the center of the island. If the tropical heat starts to get to you, you can grab cold drinks, snacks, towels, goggles, and other beach essentials. It’s a convenient little stop that allows visitors to relax and enjoy the island a bit longer.

The panoramic view from the top is simply breathtaking and well worth the wait, making Cabugao Gamay one of the most unforgettable stops on the entire Gigantes Island tour.

Bantigue Island Sandbar

Bantigue Island is a fantastic stop, especially around lunchtime. The long stretch of white sandbar creates a stunning backdrop for photos and videos, with the surrounding blue waters making every angle picture-perfect [5].

This was also where we enjoyed one of the most memorable meals of the trip. The seafood feast was incredible. Fresh scallops were the star of the show, and they seemed endless. Everything was freshly prepared, flavorful, and perfectly complemented the island setting. There’s just something special about enjoying fresh seafood while surrounded by the sea where it came from. 

Beyond the food and scenery, we also had the chance to chat with some of the locals, who were warm, welcoming, and happy to share stories about the island. Their friendliness added another layer to the experience and made the stop feel even more memorable.

Of course, no group trip is complete without a few laughs and some social media content. We spent part of our time filming videos and completing our compulsory TikTok challenges — because apparently no vacation is official until at least one trending dance or funny group video has been recorded. Thankfully, the stunning sandbar provided the perfect stage for our lighthearted antics.

Between the delicious seafood, beautiful scenery, and fun moments with friends, Bantigue Island easily became one of the highlights of our Gigantes adventure.

Antonia Beach and Mini Boracay

Antonia Beach, often referred to as Mini Boracay, lives up to its nickname. The sand was remarkably fine, while the water was so clear that we could easily spot fish swimming beneath us.

At one point, we even saw a crab making its way across the shallow seabed. The excellent visibility made swimming and snorkeling especially enjoyable, and it felt like the perfect way to fully enjoy the sea and appreciate just how beautiful Gigantes Island truly is.

As our last stop for the day, Antonia Beach gave us a slow and peaceful ending to the adventure. It was the kind of place where you simply float in the water, take a deep breath, and realize how special this island really is.

The Unexpected End at Lantangan Beach

Our final planned stop was Lantangan Beach. Unfortunately, a sudden downpour changed our itinerary. For safety reasons, we had to return directly to the port instead. The journey back from Antonia Beach took approximately one and a half hours. While we were disappointed to miss Lantangan Beach, the day’s adventures had already exceeded our expectations.

• Expect limited mobile signal in some areas, so download important information and maps before your trip if needed.
